Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Joan

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter to learn about my desire to build a family through adoption. I can only imagine the difficulty of your decision. I hope to give you a feel of who I am and how I could meet the dreams of the life you envision for your child. I can promise a life filled with lots of love, adventure, laughter, and educational learning. I’ve lived a very full life; I’ve enjoyed traveling internationally, I earned my masters degree, and my career is thriving. I’ve been blessed with a supportive family and a great group of friends. Even with all the wonderful things in my life there is something missing for me- and that something is being a mom. I would be so honored if you asked me to be a mom to your child.

About My Decision to Adopt
My heart is bursting with joy when I’m around children. I know from the bottom of my heart that I was meant to be a parent. I know too, that placing your child in an adoptive home will feel like a piece of your heart is out there in the world without you there to protect him or her. I want to give you my word that I will always love, cherish, protect, and provide for your child in the same way you want to.

I also know it may be important for you to be able to touch base regularly or even just once in a while to see for yourself how happy and cared for your child is. I welcome a relationship with you- and know that as loving adults we can come together in a relationship that meets everyone’s needs.

I hope you find me a good fit, and that we can walk this road together.

Getting to Know Me
I've often been asked "where do you get all that energy?" and it makes me laugh every time. I've always been high-energy and positive thinking- both qualities that will help me chase after a little one someday! I enjoy new challenges and experiences- from a weekend long yoga retreat to trying frog legs. (yes, they taste like chicken!) I enjoy a good laugh and even more I like making other people laugh. I even took comedy classes at The Second City here in Chicago just for the fun of it.

My father had a gardening center and we all grew up working there . My Dad is a real jokester so people came to socialize as much as buy plants! From my dad I got my sense of humor and also my strong work ethic. Both have served me well in life.

The importance of education has always been instilled in me from a young age. My parents were proud I graduated from college with a business degree, and that I put myself through a master’s program (MBA) while working full time. I was even lucky enough to study a semester in London and got to see Europe.

My Work
My career as a sales director for a health and wellness web publisher allows me to provide a comfortable life for myself and for your child. My work is fun because I get to sell creative ideas involving Facebook and Twitter. I work for a great company that is really supportive of my plans to adopt. My work allows a flexible schedule so I can attend sporting events and be present at home when needed. Since my parents and siblings live close by, they can't wait to pitch and babysit!

My Passions and Sense of Fun
Now that I'm out of school, I take classes that interest me. In addition to the comedy classes, I've been learning Spanish and take tennis lessons . I even studied in Guatemala to improve my Spanish!
I’ve always had a sense of adventure and I love to travel. Some of my favorite trips have been to the Grand Canyon, Italy, France, Thailand, and Central America. One of my favorites was Costa Rica because we went white water rafting, relaxed in a mud bath, and hiked a volcano.

Some Fun Facts!
I enjoy taking active vacations! Biking in France was a blast, somehow I never lose weight on those vacations no matter how many miles I bike!

I was the “bear spotter” on my Canadian Rockies trip, and yes, I saw the Grizzly first!

I take laughter so seriously that I took comedy classes at Second City! My sides hurt every week. I’m known as “my Aunt who travels around the world”.

My nephews love my scary story-telling. I make up all sorts of funny tales, but I make sure to make the story have a happy ending.

Sushi, greek salads, kung pao chicken, spinach on pizza, , and golfing on a beautiful day are some of my favorite things.

Giving Back
I’ve always believed in giving back so I like to volunteer. It inspires me to be grateful for the advantages in life I have been given. I have done a variety of volunteer work over the years, from crisis counseling for women, to mentoring a 12 year old girl, to fundraising for a school in India. The more I volunteer with children, the more I realized that I am ready to raise a child full time on my own. I’m ready to take on the next step as a full time parent.

My Family Togetherness
One of the things I most admire about my parents' relationship is the laughter they share together. They have been married 50 years and the laughter has made some hard times easier. I spend time with my parents every week, if not more often . We watch movies, make dinner, see plays, and sometimes golf together. My family is very supportive of my adoption decision.

In addition to my wonderful parents, I have 4 siblings: 2 older (Mary and Bill) and 2 younger (Dave and Lisa) . We did all the wonderful family things while growing up; multiple trips to Disney, outdoor camping trips, even a backyard carnival. When we get together as a family we love to laugh at old times like the time my brother stuck a cherry pit in my other brother’s ear. Yes, it had to be vacuumed out!

My siblings have all gotten married and had children. I love being the aunt who provides endless hours of fun to my nieces and nephews. I have a grand total of 9 nephews and 2 nieces from ages 16 to 5. I spend the most time with my little sister’s four young boys. I love going to their baseball/hockey games, hitting wiffle balls in the backyard, taking them swimming and going on vacations together. They love sleepovers at “Aunt Joan’s”, and we have a wonderful time eating pizza and popcorn, making cookies, and riding the train in the city to special activities. My parents have a condo in Florida and we enjoy family trips there- especially in winter! I love spending time with all my family because they bring me so much joy and laughter.

My Home and Friendships
I live in a great neighborhood in Chicago with lots of diversity and great cultural events. There are 3 parks within walking distance, a library, 2 pools, and even a grocery store across the street. My place has been the gathering place when I get together with family and friends- it's warm and inviting and I like it that way.

I want your child to have tons of opportunity to meet friends and be able to go to the best schools so I might not live in the city forever. I have my eye on a nice suburb and will make the move when the time is right.

There is a church I attend on a regular basis, and I’ve been blessed to find some very positive support there through volunteer work and special church activities. My spirituality is important to me, and I have said many prayers to God to bless me with a child.

I have a wonderful network of single and married friends I can rely on. Two good friends just had babies, and I’m enjoying sharing that experience with them. I’m listening to their experiences as new moms, and can't wait to put the lessons to good use! My friends are so exited I'm beginning the adoption process, and some of them asked if they could write a note to you to tell you a little more about me.

My Promise to You
I promise to love your child unconditionally, fully, and forever. Raising a child, guiding them and offering them a wide world full of experiences will be my biggest priority in life.
Each child is so different, and I look forward to watching your child unfold and bloom into their own unique person. I will be supportive in the areas they need it, encourage independence when they are ready for it, and will be firm with limits even when they don’t want them!

I hope the words and the pictures you have seen have given you a sense about me. I want to get to know you and understand the dreams you have for your baby.
Overall, I cannot wait to share bedtime stories, first steps, school performances, helping with homework and celebrating daily events with your child. I would be honored to get to know you and would like to offer you my support and friendship.

Here’s what a few friends and family say.....
Joan is a strong, confident woman, a very caring person with family and friends. She is going to make a terrific mother (Patricia, my Mom and best friend)

Joan is warm, fun loving, active woman who loves children and loves spending time with her 11 nieces and nephews. She is energetic, creative, and fun to be around with a great sense of humor and a warm and caring heart. She is a great aunt who loves to take all her nieces and nephews out on adventures to fun places and brings joy and laughter to their hearts. They all look forward to when “Aunt Joan” is taking them on a day or weekend journey. She would bring joy, love, warmth, and caring to anyone who comes into her life and introduce them to a great family that is caring and giving and welcoming to anyone in our family (Dave, brother)

Joan has been a dear friend of mine for many years and I am thankful for our friendship. She is always there when you need her, through good times and bad. She is also one who embraces life through travel, reading, staying fit and is always open to trying new things. Joan would be a GREAT mom who would expose her child to all that life has to offer, while providing for a stable, loving home. (Susanna, friend)

Joan is one of the most caring and dependable women I know... She would be the most wonderful mother. I hope that she gets that opportunity to spread her love and spirit to a child. (Kim, friend)

Joan has been a dear friend of mine for 15 years. We met volunteering in downtown Chicago in our mid twenties. There are so many different facets of Joan that would make her an amazing mom. She is smart, dedicated, extremely giving, adventurous, fun and has an enormous capacity for love. She embraces life and lives it to the fullest. Tears of joy overcame me when she told my husband and I she was going to adopt because I know how much this would mean to her and how much love she would give a child. (Gina, friend)

Joan is a wonderful, dedicated and committed friend. As a mother, Joan would be fully engaged, focused and involved in every step of your child’s rearing. She is a person with an extraordinary amount of energy but who is also very nurturing, caring, sensitive & protective. Any child that would be fortunate enough to be adopted by Joan would rest assured be on track to developing not only a wonderful, well-rounded life, but would also learn from Joan to give back to others and their communities in an effort to make this world a better place to live. It would be a blessing for all involved for Joan to be given the greatest gift of all, the gift of life. A life she could help develop, educate & share in all the love, hopes &
