David and Matthew

We are David and Matthew. We are a happily married couple with our dog, Priscilla, and are thrilled to grow our family through the miracle of adoption. We met over 9 years ago and are fortunate to be in a stable and committed relationship that continues to grow and evolve each and every day. We both have always wanted children and are at a point in our lives, both personally and professionally, that we feel we can give a child the unconditional love they deserve in a secure and hard working family. We are financially stable and each has excellent, flexible careers. We want to raise a child and watch them grow, as they learn about the world around them. We want to be able to pass along our family memories and traditions as well as create our own.

OUR WEDDING
David proposed to Matthew in New Orleans while taking a romantic horse drawn carriage around the city. We both always wanted the fairy tale wedding from our childhoods and we instantly knew where we wanted to get married and so we went about planning our dream wedding. We were married on an absolutely gorgeous day, at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay, on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We were surrounded by our family and friends from nearby and as far away as Paris. It was the best day of our lives. We were the first gay couple to get married at the Ritz, which they were just as excited as us. Our wedding took place 4 years ago before gay marriage became legal but we didn’t care, we wanted that commitment to each other. When gay marriage did become legal in California, we went to city hall and made it official.

OUR WORK
David: I work in the Sensor Industry selling pressure sensors to the Medical, Industrial, Semiconductor, Automotive, and Aerospace Industry. I have been working in the Sensor Industry for over 20 years in various roles including: Customer Service, Engineering, Business Development, Product Management, Program Manager, and Vice President. My current and previous jobs over the past ten years allowed me to live in California working from my home office. I travel globally for my company working with customers in Asia Pacific, Latin America, Europe, and throughout North America.

Matthew: I work in the Biotech Industry. I wear several hats at my company, handling everything from HR to IT to Facilities to Office Management. The ability to multi-task is definitely one of my strengths, which will come in handy once we welcome a child into our home. While I don’t directly treat or cure any patients, I feel very rewarded when a drug our company has been working on for years does get approved and makes a difference in someone’s life. I work close to home with a great group of people and a fantastic boss. I have worked with my boss for over 10 years and have a great deal of respect for him. He is a firm believer in work / life balance and very flexible when it comes to getting the job done – whether it’s at my desk in the office, my desk at home or while visiting my family in Iowa. This will definitely be beneficial once we have a baby in order to make sure one of us is at home with him.

OUR TRAVELS
We both love to travel – whether it is a one day getaway, a long weekend or a 2 week trip. We both have traveled the globe extensively for work. But the best trips have been the ones we have taken together. We have traveled to the perfect beach paradise of Bora Bora, to the highest mountain range in the Andes, to the fabulous city of Paris, to historic London, to the town of Ceska Trebova, in the Czech Republic, where Matthew’s Great-Grandfather spent the first 9 years of his life before immigrating to the US. In the 9 years that we have been together, we have traveled to 14 countries as well as countless cities in the US. Every place we travel opens our eyes to what the world has to offer us and we leave with a little bit of knowledge, and whole lot of memories. We look forward to being able to take our baby on trips with us. We want to expose him to the vast cultures, ethnicities, histories, landscapes and possibilities that are out there.

OUR FRIENDS
Having lived in several places around the US, through our careers, and through our travels, we have an eclectic group of friends all over the world. Our friends are a great source of laughter and enjoyment in our lives. You could say we have different friends for every occasion. Friends who love going to concerts, friends to hang out and watch a movie, friends to have a dinner night, friends to hang out in the pool, friends to have over for a Wii night, friends for an afternoon of shopping, and friends who will always be there for you whenever and wherever. We have our single friends, our married friends and our friends with children.

OUR FAMILY
Family is very important to the both of us. We both come from families where our parents are still happily married (53 years and 40 years together). David’s family lives within 20 minutes of our home so we see them the most, especially his Mom and Dad. He also has two sisters and a brother, 2 nieces and 3 nephews. We enjoy going to a variety of events, restaurants, wineries, BBQs, and celebrations with them. David enjoys playing basketball with his nephews and we attend his niece’s belly dancing performances. We also have David’s family in Paris and Bordeaux, which we usually see every couple of years, but stay in touch with Facebook, Skype, and email. In David’s family, the youngest grandchild is already 18, so they are definitely ready for a baby to be brought into the family.

Matthew’s immediate family is located in Iowa, most of them within 30 minutes of each other. Although we don’t get to see them on a regular basis, we stay in touch through lots of phone calls, emails and Facebook with his cousins. His mom and dad are very active in their community and various activities. He has one sister, who with her husband, have 5 children, ranging from 6 years old to 24 years old. His niece Grace is our constant source of entertainment and smiles. Matthew also has 5 Aunts, 12 cousins, 9 2nd cousins, along with their spouses and significant others…and they aren’t done growing yet. When we all get together, his Grandparents home seems to be getting smaller and smaller. We take trips twice a year to visit the family in Iowa, more if there is a wedding, a graduation, or other celebration. Matthew’s sister and her children make a visit to California each summer and his parents try to make a trip each year as well to come and stay with us, visit our California family and enjoy California. Matthew also has his Great Aunt and Uncle and their families that are in Northern California that we love to spend time with.

Both of our families are very close-knit and involved and supportive of everything in everyone’s lives. Our families are very supportive and excited of our decision to adopt and bring in a child to the families. Matthew’s cousin adopted their daughter, so she has been a great source of information on the adoption process. We want our child to be able to get to know everyone in our families, especially our parents and Matthew’s Grandparents. Matthew’s Grandmother and Aunt Nancy give the best hugs around and we want our child to be able to remember those.

OUR HOME
We live in a comfortable, historic home, located in Northern California. We often open up our home to our family and friends for the holidays, celebrations, and get-togethers. Our city has excellent schools and is one of the safest cities around. Our city is very open and diverse, as there are many major corporate headquarters here, with people from around the world. Our home is conveniently located within short driving distance of many great attractions including the ocean, a large city, the mountains, and the countryside. We are within walking distance of the downtown where they hold farmer’s markets and events, as well as a University, several parks, and restaurants.

PRISCILLA
Priscilla is our 15 year old “puppy”. David purchased her as a puppy, but Matthew quickly fell in love with her and claimed her as “ours” when they began dating. Despite being 15 years old, everyone that sees her on our walks and outings thinks she is a puppy. Although she has lost her hearing, there are three words she can always hear: food, walk and treat. Otherwise she is in good health and shows no signs of slowing down. She has even become an international star in Bordeaux, thanks to Skype. Joseph, David’s 4 year old 2nd cousin, thinks Priscilla is “very beautiful”.

PARENTING
We are ready to welcome a baby into our home and give them the love and care they deserve from the bottom of our beings. We will raise them to be honest, compassionate, caring, hard working and appreciative, but most importantly to be happy. We plan to expose them to all cultures and ethnicities, both locally and through foreign travel to experience things first hand. We want our child to grow up to be aware of the world around them and that anything is possible. We will encourage our child to try new things and not be scared of failure. We will be supportive of our child, cheer them on in sporting events or after-school activities, help them with their education, and always be someone who will listen to them and help them make decisions.

IN CLOSING
We would like to thank you for taking the time to learn about us. We know this process is very important to you in finding the right home for your baby. We are extremely appreciative that you have looked at our letter, learned about us and our dream of becoming parents through adoption.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best Wishes,
David and Matthew
