Choose A Family : Parent Profile

Antje

Dear Birth Mother,
I want to say thank you for choosing adoption for your child. You are very courageous and you obviously have a deep consideration for the welfare of others. I truly admire and respect your strength in going through this very difficult process. All I want to do in this letter is to tell you about myself and about why I cannot wait to adopt a child.

About Myself
My name is Antje (A-n-t-y-a, I know, strange German name!) and I’m a college professor. I teach film studies. I always loved movies and storytelling and was very lucky to be able to combine these interests with my love for teaching and being around young people. I care deeply about my students and many of them stay in touch with me long after they graduate. At the same time, my job is ideal for motherhood, which is what I have always longed for. I work from home most of the week and enjoy very long vacations, so I’m at home full time for four months of the year. I love to cook and entertain, practice yoga and enjoy playing board games with my friends. My mom, Gisela, lives with me and cannot wait to enjoy her grandchild and complete our family. I was raised in Germany, but chose to make my home in the United States many years ago. I love it here and look forward to raising my child in the States, while exposing him or her to my European home as well.

My Home
I live in a college town with a strong local community of artists, musicians and academics. It’s a place that is wonderfully creative and free-spirited, yet wholesome to grow up in. There are many non-traditional families. Many of my friends are adoptive parents or were adopted as children themselves. I own a lovely Victorian house in historic downtown. It has a cute back yard, ready to be equipped with a swing and a sandbox. A lot of young families live here. Children walk to school or visit on foot on the tree-lined sidewalk. I grew up this way and I want the same experience for my child.

Germany
We also have a home where I grew up. It’s located in a medieval little town, where one feels a sense of history upon seeing its old and pretty buildings (the town was founded 825 years ago). My family gathers at the German house for long summer vacations and Christmas holidays. What I love most about going back to Germany is hiking in the beautiful woods or going to eat ice cream in the old town.

My Family
My mom is the most loving person in the world and my role model. She is supportive of her children in whatever they aspire to do and she is always on your side. She is the kind of mother I hope to be. Moreover, she cannot wait for the arrival of a new grandchild to be an active grandparent in the child’s life. My dad sadly passed away many years ago and we miss him very much, of course. I’m also extremely close with my brother, Roland, and my sister, Ulrike. My sister and her husband have two kids, Fanny (8) and Nikolas (11). I have been around these two since they were born and have become the most devoted aunt to them. I cannot imagine life without these two rascals and they really want a cousin!

My Friends
My circle of friends is very close-knit. Almost all of them have small children. My friend Brigitte, for instance, has three boys and we frequently venture out together, going to the park and playgrounds, or we all hang out together barbecuing in the back yard. We are a diverse bunch of people from many different countries. There are biology professors and dancers, musicians and historians, chefs and writers. And of course, filmmakers like me. We are all dedicated to bringing up our kids in a nurturing and encouraging environment that allows them to become whoever they want to be.

Travel
I believe that understanding the different cultures that make up this world and growing up as a global citizen is elementary for every child living on this planet. My family and friends love to travel together exploring new beautiful places and new cultures. I really cannot wait to explore the world as a parent and to see new things through the eyes of my child.

Education
While there are many good schools here in town, I believe that education starts in the home. I also think that learning should be fun. Many important skills can be taught while hiking and camping, playing sports, reading books together or visiting museums. There are as many ways to nurture a child as there are children. Choosing the right school is important, but creating a happy home environment full of stimulating things will further allow a child to grow.

Thank you for reading my letter and considering me as the loving mother of your baby. Loving a child and creating a wonderful home has always been my heart’s desire and adoption is the way through which I hope to make this dream come true. I always knew that adoption would be my choice as a parent. I hope your decision will be a little easier knowing that your child will be loved by a close-knit family with broad horizons. I would love to speak or meet with you at any time.

Best wishes for whatever choice you make.

Sincerely,
Antje
