Andrea

Dear Birthmother,

Grace & Courage

Grace and Courage is what I see when I picture you.

I want to thank you, because you are about to give two of life's greatest gifts: the gift of birth and the gift of adoption. Both gifts show that you are putting your baby's needs above everybody else's. I think you are an amazing person for taking these steps along a pathway, on which I would love to join you.

I could not feel more honored than to provide tender love, education, endless opportunities, lots of fun and adventure, and a stable and safe home environment for your child. I am so ready and excited to be a parent, and I feel that adoption will allow me the opportunity to share my love, security and happiness with the little one!

My Family
I grew up as the younger of two girls, in a charming small town in Northwest Germany. My parents instilled good values in us and gave us a great education as well as stability in a beautiful home. My favorite memories are the 4-week-long summer holiday trips to Denmark, where we had a lot of fun as a family—whether at the beach, or going to an amusement park, or learning how to windsurf on the fjord! So, I go back to Germany/Denmark once a year to keep making new and joyful memories with family and friends.

My mother is the oldest of six siblings, while my father has one sister, so I have 11 cousins! We celebrate big milestones in elegant style, like my parents' silver anniversary at a chateau from the 17th century—which even had a moat around it!

Family gatherings are always wonderful. For Christmas and birthdays my mother invites everybody to traditional four o'clock German coffee-and-cake time. She bakes all the delicious cakes and pies herself and decorates the long table with candles and flowers from her garden. Young and old sit down to talk for hours about family matters and the ways of the world.

Sadly, my dad passed away recently, but I know that he is in spirit with me every day. I can feel his strength and love.

Friends
Within my friendship circle there are great male and female role models and two of my friends are adopted themselves!

I think I have an amazing group of friends both in California and Germany. They are my chosen family and my tried-and-true support system. I can call my local friends in the middle of the night with a problem, and they are at my place within minutes.

Since most of my dear friends and their families live close by, we get together often and have a great time on holidays and in everyday life. Some of us happen to be German by ancestry, so there's instant immersion into another language (no plane trip required)!

My friend Joni wrote in a recent thank you card:

"I love you and cherish our true friendship! You are the kindest, loving soul, and I am lucky to have met you!"

My friend Stacey wrote in a recent birthday card:

"I celebrate with you the day you were born. What a wonderful day for the world. My creative sister, my wise soul, I thank God that you are in my life."

Children
There is no greater joy than hearing the laughter of children. I grew up with younger cousins and enjoyed taking care of them long before my first official babysitting stint. My cousins—and subsequently my friends' kids—tend to seek me out in moments of great joy. I think that's because I can see the world through a child's eye, and they can feel it and love how we, as a team, can share those great experiences together.

They also come to me with their "ouchies", because I am big on compassion. I kiss and hug their little pains away, as well as make them feel safe and taken care of. During a visit at my friend's house, her then 5-year-old autistic son paid me the greatest compliment. He—who always shies away from everybody's physical touch and eye contact—flew into my arms and hugged me good, long, and tight. No words were required...

Work = Fun!
Work equals fun for me... Why? Because I modeled my profession after my hobby. So, I use the same artistic talents (which I tap into when I paint and sketch in my spare time) for doing freelance work in the field of graphic design and marketing.

Work: My designs include logos for businesses, banners, Twitter backgrounds, webpage graphics and edgy magazine illustrations. Creating those is just as much fun as stroking with a brush over canvas in my spare time!

Fun: My oil paintings, water colors, sketches and photographs often depict deeply personal connections to people, landscapes, or objects. My art has been exhibited in local galleries, where recently I won the "People's Choice Award" for one of my photographs.

Home
I feel very blessed to live in a safe, established and family-oriented neighborhood. My home is within walking distance from two parks, a California Distinguished School (K-5), and a fun fantasy playground. It's only about a half hour hike alongside a creek to a gorgeous waterfall. Paradise found!

In Europe I feel at home in the house where I grew up in. My great-grandfather designed and built that very house for his family and the generations to follow. My parents have lived there since I was born.

Other (business) properties in town have been in our family for an equally long time. How lovely it will be to continue the tradition into the 5th generation and beyond...!

Adventurous Spirit
I will let your child explore and go on new adventures... whether it be through taking a dance lesson, learning a new instrument, or trying something athletic. I promise to take your child on many great internal and external adventures! After all, this is how you and I figured out our very own likes and dislikes in life.

I like to try new and exciting things at least once... and maybe once is enough—like skydiving, snuba diving, parasailing, snowmobiling, and skiing. However, I do love windsurfing and jet-skiing (on the lake or on the ocean—and sometimes even with dolphins by my side.) And so I keep coming back to those two wet and windy pastimes.

And after the thrill, I like to chill... usually by doing yoga, by reading a novel, or by journaling and writing creative stories.

Nature Lover
My dad instilled the love for nature in me, and I cannot wait to pass it on. I want to take my child to visit the nearby beaches or to hike with me either locally or in the National Parks. I am also looking forward to us taking strolls alongside a Scandinavian fjord. Plus, I want to explain the weather patterns and listen together for bird calls... just as my dad did with me!

Food & Guests
Just like my mother, I love to bake. From gingerbread houses and swan lake éclairs to "chocolate-cherry-gopher-mound-cake" ... you name it, and I am game. My child will probably spend many hours in the kitchen with me, experimenting with food (all kinds of food, not just baked goods), and then we will enjoy spoiling our guests with our fun and yummy creations!

Travel
Yes, I admit it... I love to travel... and I have been to many magical places: from Hong Kong's food markets to Big Ben in London... as well as from the Tsar's palaces in Russia to Alaska's icy glaciers... Plus, I traveled through both, the Suez & the Panama Canal. I can hardly wait to share the excitement of being on the road (and the seven seas) with my child.

Why travel? I believe new settings and other cultures open up our hearts and imagination. They give us a new way of thinking and a greater appreciation for what is beyond our everyday reach. I will for example never forget the first sight of wallabies hopping alongside the road in Australia... so cute!

Can you imagine how a child would feel about it, if it makes an adult already so happy?

My Pledge
I will be an integral part in your child's upbringing, starting by staying home for the first few years...

I will always love my child. I will nurture, educate and prepare them well for life, so that they become a very special, smart, sweet, and assertive young adult who reaches their full potential.

I know I will marvel at this new "love of my life" from the day we both shall meet, and I will never stop being amazed by who they are at any given moment, and who they will grow up to be.

I will guide and teach my child so they can thrive as an emotionally, spiritually, and physically enriched human being. Your child will be happy, healthy and well taken care of by me. That is my goal and my promise.

Please know that I am very grateful that you read a little about me. Yet, all the languages in the world cannot adequately describe how much I admire your grace and courage.

With all my love,

Andrea
